Lincoln High School welding students completed the picnic table for the Carolyn Farris memorial. We were approached early in the school year about this project and after some discussion, several of the seniors were more than happy to put their skills to use for such a worthy cause. The finishing touch to this table was to utilize our new PlasmaCam system, which was purchased with the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant, to cut out the Old English L for the table top. These seniors did a fantastic job with their metal fabrication, welding and programming skills while serving their community in an admirable fashion. Job well done! During the month of January, LES is proudly focusing on kindness. As a school, we have set a goal to complete 500 acts of kindness by Thursday, January 28th. We started working towards our goal on Monday, January 11th. To monitor progress towards our goal, Kindness Challenge cards will be available for students to fill out whenever they complete an act of kindness and for staff when they see an act of kindness take place. There is a bulletin board in the main hallway that allows students to track our progress towards the goal and view acts of kindness that have been completed. So far, students have completed 100 acts of kindness! Stay tuned for more updates!
As another part of our focus on kindness this month, LES students are doing Coins for a Cause to raise money for our custodian, Alan Finch. Mr. Finch has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatments. Students are able to bring in spare change or funds to add to the collection jar that will go to Mr. Finch for medical expenses.
We are encouraging students to complete acts of kindness not only during the school day, but at home and in the community as well. We hope to have students become more aware of the impact acts of kindness can have and start making kind choices more and more! We would also like to invite community members to join us in spreading kindness and completing random acts of kindness. We’re all in this together!
Our school will also be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge later this month. Be on the lookout for further information about this. If you have any questions or if you’d like to know more about ideas and how you can participate alongside us during our kindness month please reach out to Mrs. Ptacek, LES School Counselor.

Parents and Guardians of USD 298. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority during these uncertain times. I have consulted with our Lincoln County Health Department, Kansas Department of Education, Kansas Department of Health, our local school board, and the faculty and staff of USD 298. The combination of all of this input has made it clear that USD 298 needs to extend the mask mandate policy through the semester until the Christmas break. At that point, I will again gather data from multiple sources to determine the best course of action for the safety of our students and staff. To summarize, USD 298 will continue to require masks for all students and staff for the remainder of this semester. We would appreciate your support as we make these difficult decisions. Thank you.

USD 298 continues to greatly benefit from the benevolence of the Post Rock Community Foundation and the generous patrons who support their important work. This year two Post Rock Community Grants were granted to USD 298. The first at LES from the Kansas Health Foundation Fund will enable the purchase of new playground equipment that will combine outdoor learning and active play for children. The second grant from the Dane G. Hansen Community Fund will support the Rubber Floor Project at LJSHS for the safety of the weight equipment and students and community patrons. This project is beneficial for maintaining quality exercise equipment for longer use which benefits the health of all students and community patrons. Thank you again for your continued generosity and support of area schools.

Following recommended best practices, there will be students who will be placed in a modified quarantine situation at school. The needle continues to move upward for Kansas' self-response to the 2020 Census. Our state moved up another tick and now stands at 65.8% for self-response. That's 13th best in the nation. (Minnesota leads the way at 71.5%.) The national self-response average is 62.0%.
We will continue to aggressively encourage Kansas households to complete the census questionnaire online, by phone of mail through October 31. This push will continue and even while census takers are dispatched in mid August to personally visit non-responding households. Visit the 2020 Census response rate map to see how your city county and census tract are performing.

Parents and Guardians Only: Please fill out the survey (the survey link is below) to help USD 298 gather information concerning your level of comfort in sending your child/children to Lincoln Elementary or Lincoln Junior Senior High in the fall. Please complete a separate survey for each school aged child, so we may be aware if you have different comfort levels with different buildings. The link is also provided on www.usd298.com in the Live Feed section.

“To renew enthusiasm among Kansas communities, US Census planning a collaborative statewide push to engage Kansans in a “Call for the Count” week. Call for the Count” is very basic and built on the notion of a phone tree. And it’s easily done from the comfort of your home. This can be a call, a text, an email, or outreach via your favorite social media platforms!
How does it work? – Ask at least five co-workers, friends, neighbors or family members to fill out their Census form. And then ask those who agree to call five of their friends and family members. And so on. The concept is in keeping with the idea trusted voices will be the ones to convince others — especially those hard-to reach -- to fill out the Census

Consider this number: 88,700,700. That's how many households across the United States have responded to the 2020 Census. That puts the entire country over 60% for self-responding to the Census, a key milestone reached during extraordinarily challenging times.
And yay for Kansas! Our state remains in the upper tier for self-response to the Census with a 64.2% rate. (2020 Census response rate map) Here's how the state's four congressional districts compare:
- 1st Congressional District - 59.7%
- 2nd Congressional District - 63.7%
- 3rd Congressional District - 69.7%
- 4th Congressional District - 63.9%

#8 Weeks of Awesome

Hi everyone, Mrs. Ptacek here!
One thing that I've really been working on is getting a website set up for the Lincoln Elementary School Counseling Program. I'm excited to say that the website is now officially up and running! I made a short little video walkthrough on how to get to the website through our USD 298 website (www.usd298.com), where it will always be available, but I will put the direct link for the LES counseling website here as well. This website has all the information about our LES school counseling program, various resources for parents/home, resources/information regarding Covid-19 and virtual school counseling, AND my contact information. I especially recommend checking out the contact tab on the site if you have any questions or concerns for me at this time- I'm happy to help! My goal is to update this site as frequently as I can in order to provide relevant information and resources not only about the LES counseling program, but also about events happening in the world that can have a direct impact on school counseling.

Message from KSHSAA to all spring student athletes and their coaches:

This prohibition is consistent with KSDE and governmental guidance and may be extended, should conditions warrant. Please note spring sports team members are prohibited from club or outside team participation and practice during this period. Not only would such outside participation be contrary to handbook rule, it would be contrary to the very reason activities are cancelled during the time we seek to mitigate potential transfer of the contagion."

A reminder to those with Community card access, even though we will not have school March 13-March 20 for spring break, the access times will remain the same (7-10pm M-F and 7am-10pm Sat-Sun). Thank you!

The impact for USD #298 is directly related to Federal programs and funding that supports our students, schools, and the Lincoln Center area. Accurate information will benefit our Lincoln USD #298 community in many ways. The KSDE Fact Sheet shares some of the programs that bring in Dollars to Kansas and ultimately to USD #298 from the census. This information is utilized for 10 years of special funding. That is the main reason to get accurate data about our school community.
