April 26th turned out to be a completely beautiful day in Lincoln County for the 25th Annual Fourth Grade Field Day. The day started out with a spring chill in the air, however, once the sun rose, the winds picked up but were manageable for 46 fourth graders from Lincoln Elementary School and Lucas-Sylvan Grove Elementary School. Students buttoned up their jackets and rotated in groups through 6 stations, ranging from Edible Aquifers presented by Salina County Planning & Zoning Environmental Health Services, and FFA volunteers of USD 298 & USD 299, Soil Profiles presented by Kansas State Soil Scientist, soil tunnels (presented by FFA groups), Aquatics, presented by retired, KS Wildlife and Parks Aquatics Biologist, Ks, Department Wildlife explained how predators and prey need conservation for survival, Kristen Kuntz, Supervisory District Conservationist, and Diana Harden, Saline County District Manager, used the Stream Model Trailer to show students how streams work, constantly picking up soil particles and depositing them downstream.
The field day wouldn’t be a success without the assistance of the volunteers of FFA groups, teachers, bus drivers, sponsors, USD 299, USD 298, City of Sylvan Grove, Sylvan Grove Fair Board, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Park & Tourism, and surrounding conservation districts. It was a great day to see so many different entities working together to bring a learning opportunity to our county students.
